Message from the FEI President

The 2005 FEI European Jumping Championship will be held in San Patrignano, the well-known Italian community active in the rehabilitation of drug addicts.

Equestrian sport is unique in its relation between the human being and the animal. It is the first time however, that the special relationship between sport and solidarity is at the heart of one of the most prestigious equestrian events of the world.

For many years, equestrian sport and horse breeding have been an integrated part of the Community’s rehabilitation programme, which is a matter of great pride for the FEI. The importance of sport in the development of self-esteem and of the capacity to face the challenges of life is acknowledged worldwide. In equestrian sport, the relationship with the horse is a very particular one, made of confidence and care. It is a source of inspiration and steadiness that will support the quests at San Partignano throughout their life.

In allocating the European Jumping Championship to San Patrignano, the FEI recognised the excellent standard of the Community’s equestrian installations as well as the Community’s organisational skills, but also meant to demonstrate the important role that the horse can play in our modern society in rehabilitating those affected by drug abuse and in helping towards social reintegration.

For the first time in the sport’s history, the European Championship will represent an occasion to send a cultural and social message to a far broader audience than sport and equestrian fans.

“I think it’s great that the Championship is being held at San Patrignano- for us athletes, for the public, and for the young people of the community. This way, they have a chance to be involved in an important event and to show what they are capable of.”
